He resigned his post as Assistant Keeper of Printed Books when Panizzi, instead of himself, was appointed Keeper in 1837. He was also, and had been since 1797, Vicar of Abbots Bromley, between Stafford and Stoke on Trent. He is best remembered for his outstanding translation of Dante's Divine comedy (1814).
